La Rivoluzione industriale impone nuove regole del gioco nella organizzazione dei sistemi di produzione e nell'ambito della "técnica del técnico" (cfr. José Ortega y Gasset) è necessario che si parli una lingua comune e unificata. Come per le unità di misura si procede verso una unificazione e una standardizzazione, così anche per il linguaggio tecnico è necessario che si parli la stessa lingua. Nascono così le scuole tecniche e di conseguenza anche i manuali tecnici.
